Lower East Side, New York — Harkening back to the classier side of Prohibition, the 2nd Floor on Clinton is a cozy piece of boozer nostalgia worlds apart from the Barramundi bar beneath it. Relaxed upper-crust groups and in-the-know students looking to splurge make their way through Barramundi, ring a buzzer next to a door marked PRIVATE, and are soon ushered up a narrow staircase and into a single-room speakeasy where deco lamps throw a golden hue across antique furnishings and white brick walls.

Comment from Dave, March Flat I popped into Champagne Tuesday evening, a very forgettable experience. Some very below average Coyote Dancers and terrible loud music. One to miss at the moment. Review from Dick Farang, March The central stage of the former Club Malibu has been replaced by a smaller, round unused one and there is a pool table behind it. They stayed on stage for very long stints. After a short pole-dance intermezzo most customers left. I did not see the infamous elderly Nancy with the giant glasses, ridiculous silicone balloons and worn white net stockings, who had come from Kiss A-GoGo. The only nudity I saw were the fatties soaping in the shower cubicle and the erotic cartoons on the television screens. A mediocre year-old girl told her barfine was 1, baht and she wanted 2, baht ST and 4, baht LT, adding same Walking.

But there was little pretension in the spacious bar, and lots of Big Buck Hunter, so we happily drank our beer. All the guys look the same: Black wife-beaters, rips down the sides, skinny but their nipples are always hanging out.
They all listen to Metallica… but I like that. I wish there was a hook for my bag. While the Sunday night crowd was relatively small, the layout of the bar certainly lent itself to a much larger group of people. Counter-tops and stools lined the wall and offered tons of seating. The Gaf is definitely not a sports bar, as there was only one or two TVs, and the decor was very Irish pubby.

The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan, roughly located between the Bowery and the East River, and Canal Street and Houston ionally an immigrant, working class neighborhood, it began rapid gentrification in the mids, prompting the National Trust for Historic Preservation to place.
Jump to navigation Jump to search Sure, for now the Elmwood Village is Buffalo ‘s premier neighborhood for fine dining and cute urban boutiques; Allentown is where local artists and bohos congregate, and downtown still takes the cake when it comes to the urban rehabilitation that Western New Yorkers have grown more and more used to. But look out — the West Side is poised to snatch all three of those crowns.
And even if this part of town is still very much a work in progress, there’s a seductive appeal to the chaotic cacophony of cultures that’s already there today, courtesy of the vibrant immigrant communities that have moved in over the past decade or so. In the foreground is the Olmsted-designed Prospect Park. Diversity, to the nth degree, is the name of the game here. Munch on samosas while perusing through a shop full of authentic African handicrafts, then go up to the cash register while the folks behind you in line chitchat in Burmese and a car drives by outside with thumping reggaeton on the stereo — that’s the West Side.
And when your busy day is done, why not head to the waterfront, through leafy streets lined with gorgeous old Victorians, to relax and enjoy cool breezes and stunning views over the mighty Niagara River? Less hip locals will try to dissuade you from crossing west of Richmond Avenue. It’s “dangerous”, they’ll tell you. And while it’s true that the West Side has had a rough go of it over the past half-century and it’s still a ways from exorcising its demons when it comes to crime, poverty and other social ills, this is probably the neighborhood that best embodies Buffalo’s phoenixlike rise from the ashes.
So do yourself a favor and ignore the naysayers.
